Dealing with conflicts

If your department is like most, sooner or later there may come a time when your opinion doesn't quite line up with that of the director or you may feel like you've been wronged in some way. I think in the secular circles this is commonly referred to as "artistic differences". When that happens, there is a right and a wrong way to approach the issue.

The absolute worst way to handle this is to let the flesh take over and go give that person a piece of your mind. Even though you may feel like doing that, don't under any circumstances. That'll be the quickest way to win a spot on the pew, no longer able to fulfill your calling musically.

On the other side of that, don't let it sit and fester in you. This is a perfect recipe for holding a grudge and creating animosity toward your fellow team member which will begin to drive a wedge between you and the worship team and eventually the church.

So how should such conflicts be handled? First pray for them and yourself asking God to direct you in dealing with it. Many times it ends right there. God will help you work through your issues and will help you find peace and understanding. If you still feel like there is a problem, then you need to go to the music director in private (don't air out your dirty laundry in front of the rest of the team) with the right attitude and explain the situation. It may be that your idea or opinion may be one that they haven't even thought about and you may actually have a valid point that they were willing to consider. However, if after meeting with them, you still disagree, then it's ok to respectfully disagree but still maintain your respect and support for them.

Hebrews 13:17 says to obey those that have rule over you. When you sign up to be a member of a worship team, you are also submitting yourself to the authority of the music director who is appointed by the pastor or church leadership. 1 Samuel 15:22 also says to obey is better than sacrifice, So if you sacrifice your time week after week but are not submitted in your heart to the leadership of the director, then your sacrifice isn't worth anything in the eye's of God. This will only be a hinderance to the flow of the Spirit flowing through the leading of worship.

So don't let disagreements get in the way of your worship. Deal with them right away before they become a much larger problem.
